Family Law / Divorce
Family law is the largest single area of our law practice. It encompasses not only dissolution of marriage – what most people call divorce – but also a host of other issues. We handle premarital agreements, custody claims, visitation and relocation issues, juvenile court matters, post judgment motions and appellate matters.
A family law attorney is required to have a broad range of knowledge. It is not unusual for a divorce matter to touch on aspects of real estate, taxes, bankruptcy, pensions, or health care law. We appreciate that these legal issues arise at a very difficult time in our clients' lives. We understand that family law cases require a unique level of focus and attention.
Most of the cases we handle end with a negotiated settlement, but, for some, matters must be tried in Court. In either event, we strive to represent our clients' interests zealously. At any given time in recent years, we are involved in 50 to 100 cases. Most of them are in the Superior Courts of Middlesex, New London and New Haven, but we also deal with high conflict matters assigned to the Regional Family Trial Docket.
It is the nature of this practice area that a "one size fits all" approach is not workable. We use a number of different methodologies in family law cases, including a traditional approach, a collaborative model, and mediation.
